About Our Products
A preview of some of the botanicals we use for their extraordinary benefits to skin and body and their energetic properties.
About our Calendula
We grow our own organic flowers in the foothills of the White Mountains on our Maine farm where there is great southern exposure and rich fertile soil. With careful attention to detail, we oversee every step of the process from seed to jar – tilling, composting, planting, mulching, watering, weeding, harvesting, infusing, preparing, and producing. All of our procedures and practices are natural and organically based, without pesticides, fertilizers, or synthetic chemicals. It is all powered by sun, wind, and rain, the pollinators, and our own hands and hearts.
Plants are carefully monitored and blossoms are harvested fresh during periods of peak bloom for optimal infusion concentrations, and then they are solar-infused, using premium organic extra virgin olive oil, in the traditional way in glass jars. During this gradual curing process, the Calendula blossoms release and transfer their healing benefits and aromatic essence. Every skin and body care product, except Sweet Fern Heal All: New Alchemy For The Skin, contains Calendula. Called ‘herbal sunshine’ and ‘healing sunshine’ by some, it truly is one of Nature’s super flowers with exceptional healing and restorative properties to promote and maintain healthy skin. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial.
Olive Oil
This carrier oil is liquid gold for our solar infusions. The Greek name ‘olive’ is derived from the Semitic-Phoenician ‘el’yon’ meaning superior. Olive oil has traditionally been used in cooking, but has many other uses including as a moisturizer for the skin and for massage. Our organic extra virgin olive oil comes from Spain and Tunisia and is cold-pressed without the use of chemicals, allowing it to retain the highest amounts of natural nutritive components and their health benefits.
Olive Oil protects the skin from premature aging, won’t clog pores, and enhances exfoliation. It is high in the natural anti-oxidant benzoic acid which helps prevent infection caused by bacteria and is a natural preservative. According to Rudolph Steiner, it is a perfect balance energetically for the volatile nature of essential oils and when blended strikes a natural balance most easily absorbed by the skin. Olive oil also contains chlorophyll which is important for facilitating absorption that allows the skin to breathe and process the nourishment provided by the infused herbs.
Solomon's Seal
Solomon’s Seal, which we include in our Muscle Recovery Liniment, is a remarkable remedy for a wide variety of muscular and skeletal problems. Its extraordinary nutritive and medicinal properties influence issues relating to tendons, ligaments, bones, joints, bruises, breaks, etc. It has been used to help adjust the tension on connective tissues, thereby preventing injuries and correcting old traumas. It nourishes and lubricates ligaments, tendons, muscles, and attachments to make the muscular and skeletal systems function more harmoniously.
Solomon’s Seal, as its genus Polygonatum reflects, is a many-jointed plant, referring to the nodes on the stems and the jointed roots (or actually, rhizomes) that look like a gnarled mass of knuckles or vertebra with little seals on them. The plant flowers in the spring and we harvest the rhizomes in the fall. When the stem dies back at the end of the season it detaches from the root leaving behind a round mark that looks like a little “seal.” Each year a new unit of rhizome is generated and a new stem rises up. So, there is a mark for every year the plant has been growing. The seals resembled the sigils or inscribed circles used by magicians to invoke spirits. King Solomon was associated with wisdom in the Bible and then later with magic. Hence, this plant was called Sigilum Salomonis or Solomon’s Seal.
Blue Tansy
Blue Tansy’s sweet scent is soothing for skin and spirit in our Revitalizing Facial Serum. It promotes blemish-free skin and remedies rashes, redness, and irritations. It is an anti-oxidant powerhouse for skin exposed to the elements, a superb tonic for thirsty skin, and emotionally calming.
Beeswax
Beeswax is an essential part of our skin and body care products. Ours is a wildflower beeswax from a fourth generation Maine bee keeper. It is golden amber with a pleasing, highly aromatic deep and rich honey scent. We work exclusively with this local vendor because of the consistent quality of the beeswax. We allow the beeswax to add a delicate balm-like quality to some of our products which we do not beat, whip, or boil during the production process so as to maintain all the energetic benefits of the bioactive plant materials.
Beeswax is anti-allergenic and provides a protective barrier against irritants while allowing the skin to breathe. It has a high Vitamin A content to boost skin cell production and renewal. It hydrates skin by trapping moisture and effectively preventing its loss. Its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and germicidal properties soothe itchiness and heal skin irritations. As an antiseptic it cleanses skin.
Helichrysum
Helichrysum, also known as Immortelle, Everlasting, Italian Straw Flower, and Sun Gold oil, is superior and one of the most effective essential oils for use anywhere on the skin. It is an ingredient that regenerates and replenishes healthy skin in our facial products. Its superlative therapeutic and restorative properties dramatically improve skin vibrancy and imperfections, especially for mature, oily, sensitive, and compromised skin.
Our Helichrysum originates from the island of Corsica where the tiny yellow flowers thrive at high altitude on rocky cliff sides. As long as there is abundant sun, this plant can grow under harsh conditions and in the most depleted soils. It is a beautiful scent -- rich, warm, pungent and sweetly herbaceous with a diffusive honey and tea-like aroma and earthy undertones.
It is an enchanting wild-crafted oil, powerful yet gentle, with an uplifting, elevating effect on the psyche and is reputed to have energetic qualities useful for treating physical and emotional trauma. We also use it in our Muscle Recovery Liniment for its incredible effects on damaged tissue and its anti-inflammatory ability to ease painful and swollen muscles, joints, and tendons.
Rose
It is said that a rose is a rose is a rose. Yet, roses come in many diverse and wonderful shapes, sizes, varieties, aromas, and colors. They are a virtual panoply of flowering plants. Beyond this, the rose is obviously valued for its perfume-like qualities and for its healing, beautification, and therapeutic properties.
Rose petals and hips have a complex array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for the skin. They are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent, and have a nutrient profile rich in fatty acids which makes them a natural choice for moisturizing and hydrating formulas. Their ability to restore, regenerate, and repair tissue is exceptional.
We grow our own heirloom roses. We harvest the petals for our Rose Water Mist which has a fresh, soft-floral aroma. This rose water can be used as a single-ingredient toner, as well as for balancing emotions and establishing a sense of well-being. Rose has an affinity for the heart and emotional spheres of the mindbody and spirit.
We also use fresh blossoms to make rose oil for our Facial Cleansing Oil and for OM and Journey solid natural perfumes. And we harvest wild growing multiflora roses for the Sweet Fern Heal All salve infusions. While we do not make our own rose hip oil, it is an ingredient in several of our facial care products, including the Revitalizing Facial Serum and Radiance Facial Moisturizer and Toner.
Cape Chamomile
Cape Chamomile is a precious essential oil. We source it directly from a small-scale farmer in South Africa who grows organically and harvests by hand once a year. He is devoted to the maintenance of biodiversity and the production of indigenous essential oils. Cape Chamomile grows naturally only in the coastal belt of the Fynbos biome of the Western Cape Province. Indigenous peoples have used it to prepare tinctures, decoctions, and infusions for a plethora of issues.
We cherish this rare and beautiful oil and include it in our facial products for its highly rejuvenating properties. It is distantly related to the German Blue and Roman chamomiles and shares their blue color as well as a calming effect for skin and spirit. Energetically, it provides deep relaxation for physical, emotional, and cellular healing. It has an exquisite scent that is honeyed and herbaceous with a diffusive and powerful fruity aroma, notes of sweet earth and apricot, and soft floral and spice undertones.
Sweet Fern
Sweet Fern is spicy and exotic, very sweet and deep, with resinous and balsamic undertones. It is a medium-sized woody shrub in the forests of northern New England. Its delicate aroma lingers in the summer air and remains palpable even after its leaves have dried. Its aromatic leaves are dotted with dark green resiniferous glands resembling ferns. It feels earthy and ethereal, sparking a sensation of groundedness and transcendence, of being rooted and rising like the tree.
We include it in our Radiance Facial Moisturizer and Toner, Sweet Fern Mist, and Sweet Fern Heal All Salve: New Alchemy For The Skin for its ability to maintain and heal skin, its energetic properties, and its complex scent. It is anti-bacterial and astringent, as well as cooling as it helps alleviate itchy, irritated, inflamed, and overheated skin. Energetically this oil is a bridge connecting earth and sky within us. Its intoxicating, refreshing scent creates a sense of unity with the abundance of the natural world.
It is hardy, growing in poorer soils of meadows, pastures, and woodland clearings and requires ample light. We encounter it daily. It grows prolifically within the open areas and fields of our farm. We are aware of its presence as one of the first plants to green up in spring and to dry back in early winter. It has traditionally been used to treat skin inflammations such as poison ivy, bronchial obstructions, sprains, issues of the heart, and in Native American ceremonies.
Palo Santo
We selected this oil for its alchemy. We love its complex scent and its therapeutic and energetic protective qualities for our bodies, dwelling places, and mental-emotional-psychic well-being. In Radiance Facial Moisturizer and Toner we combine it with the skin-healing oils of Carrot Seed and Helichrysum to combat skin infections and impure skin conditions. In the Palo Santo Mist the oil enhances a meditative state, encourages relaxation, and quiets the mind. The mist can also be used to alleviate congestion due to colds, flu, sinus infections, and asthma.
Our Palo Santo essential oil comes from trees that are sustainably harvested from family-owned land in Ecuador and then distilled in small batches using only the aged heartwood of fallen trees. This distiller has studied and practices the local shamanic tradition and maintains that only those trees that have been dead for at least several years have accumulated the natural resin that is slowly absorbed into the heart wood and can yield a pure essential oil with healing powers. Also known as Holy Wood and Saint Wood, it is in the same botanical family as Frankincense and Myrrh.
It has been traditionally used in South America to remove impurities from skin, body, and home. Historically, Incas used the wood in spiritual ceremonies for purification and cleansing of negative energies. Both Palo Santo’s wood and oil are believed to bring good fortune, elevate mood, and comfort those suffering from depression and anxiety.
Our customers tell us it’s the best Palo Santo blend they have ever used!
Copaiba Balsam
This is an essential ingredient in our Calendula Salve, Muscle Recovery Liniment, and Radiance Facial Moisturizer and Toner. It’s also included in our mists for its calming aroma which is well-suited for meditation, gently rebalancing the nervous system, and providing respiratory relief.
We value Copaiba Balsam for its soothing aroma and energetics, ability to reduce pain and eliminate inflammation, and protect against infection. It is mild, warm, and somewhat sweet and spicy, with a soft woody-earthy-resinous scent. It aids in healing old wounds and trauma and contributes to the uplifting and energizing nature of our blends.
According to Brazilian folklore, the Copaiba tree responds to energy fields. It is believed that negative emotions will cause the sap (resin) to flow. Thus, the name, Copaiba, meaning “copper rising.”
Red Raspberry Seed Oil is a luxurious ingredient in our Facial Cleansing Oil. It is a lightweight moisturizing oil that gently cleans and exfoliates your skin.
Intensely nourishing with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and powerful anti-oxidants, Red Raspberry Seed provides superb protective skin care with outstanding healing benefits unlike any other oil. It is highly valued for its calming and soothing qualities and is celebrated for its effectiveness at shielding the skin against environmental stressors.
Compatible with all skin types. Excellent for dry, mature, and irritated or sensitive skin and suitable for treating skin prone to blemishes, acne, and inflammatory conditions such as eczema.
Camellia Seed Oil
Camellia Seed Oil is included in our Revitalizing Facial Serum for its extraordinary skin-rejuvenating nutrients. This delicate and luxurious oil, similar in weight to the natural oil of our skin, absorbs rapidly, penetrates deeply, and leaves the skin feeling silky smooth. With exceptional emollient qualities and a reputation for decreasing fine lines, sun damage, and other signs of premature aging, Camellia is a wonderful oil for mature skin. Because of its ability to slow transdermal water loss, it is beneficial for skin that tends to be dry, dull, and flaky. Its astringent properties also make it ideal for oily skin.
Black Spruce and Eastern Hemlock
Black Spruce and Eastern Hemlock are majestic, long-lived trees and sentinel species in the northern forests. For native people these trees are sacred and embody magical qualities.
Both are perfect complements to our Sweet Fern Mist and Muscle Recovery Liniment, adding depth and complexity to the scent. They contribute additional properties that relieve aches, pain, and minor congestion and are energetically uplifting.
Notes About Specific Products
What is Oil Cleansing and why is it beneficial?
There is a long tradition of using oils to support and maintain skin health. Ancient wisdom teaches that herbal oils cleanse and lift away surface toxins while gently exfoliating, moisturizing, and bringing harmony to your skin. They disintegrate oils trapped in pores, draw out impurities, enhance circulation, and preserve your skin’s natural moisture barrier.
A cleansing oil bonds to excess oil on your skin, helping to remove dirt, makeup, and pollutants. It also functions to protect your skin. Sebum, an oily, waxy substance produced by the sebaceous glands, is your skin’s natural hydration and protection. A healthy amount of sebum acts like a barrier to environmental stressors and infection.
Herbal oils are more effective than water at cleansing and balancing your skin's hydration. They are more similar than water is to your skin’s natural outer layer and will not strip away sebum. And they contain antioxidants, free fatty acids, phospholipids, triglycerides, and phenolic compounds which nourish and protect skin.
Our Facial Cleansing Oil is light and inviting with a superior nutrient profile and remarkable healing qualities. It energizes your skin, clarifies it, and illuminates your complexion leaving it refreshed and revitalized. It is designed for use mornings and evenings. Regular use of our Facial Cleansing Oil is a beautiful way to caress your skin with loving care.
Here's how to proceed: Moisten your face and neck with a warm dampened facecloth or a couple splashes of warm water. Apply a small amount of oil to your fingertips and gently work it in to your skin. Rinse with a splash or two of water. Remove the excess oil with the facecloth. You can finish here or dab dry with a clean towel.
What is a Serum?
A serum is a facial treatment that promotes healthy skin, a beautiful appearance, and a clear complexion. It is applied after cleansing the skin. Serums are lightweight blends of plant-based oils that provide intensive and long-lasting treatment, delivering visible results more quickly than other facial care products. They contain powerful and highly concentrated amounts of specifically chosen, biologically active plants targeting a variety of skin issues and conditions. Their value is a reflection of the highly concentrated nature of serums.
They soothe sensitive skin and are quite beneficial for blemish-prone, oily skin types since they are lightweight. Serums absorb quickly and penetrate deeply into the skin because they are less thick than moisturizers. They feel light on the skin and make it feel silky smooth and soft to the touch. They are not heavy or greasy.
Our serum is broad spectrum, encouraging skin to age gracefully. It is a gentle blend of plant oils that work synergistically to hydrate, nourish, balance, and protect the skin and to promote a natural glow. We carefully selected specific, highly regarded, and effective skin-loving oils for their powerful rejuvenating, regenerative, and restorative abilities for all types of skin youthful, wise, and sun-drenched.
